The NeedOnce a republic member of the former Soviet Union, Azerbaijan gained its independence in 1992. Upon doing so, it took on complete responsibility for providing health care to its citizens. Currently, over 50% of Azeri citizens live below the poverty line. This large percentage of the population has very limited access to modern health care and has overwhelmed the nation's public health system. |

The
Azeri National Oncology Clinic treats more than 2,000 patients
per month for all types of adult cancers. Although it is the
principal cancer hospital in Azerbaijan, the Azeri National Oncology
Clinic
has received limited support from their national government to
update medical equipment for diagnosing or treating the country's
100,000 patients afflicted by cancer.
