Azeri National Oncology Clinic

The National Cancer Coalition has donated a significant amount of oncology equipment and cancer-related medical supplies to the National Oncology Clinic in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The Need

Once a republic member of the former Soviet Union, Azerbaijan gained its independence in 1992. Upon doing so, it took on complete responsibility for providing health care to its citizens. Currently, over 50% of Azeri citizens live below the poverty line. This large percentage of the population has very limited access to modern health care and has overwhelmed the nation's public health system.

Hospital

The Azeri National Oncology Clinic treats more than 2,000 patients per month for all types of adult cancers. Although it is the principal cancer hospital in Azerbaijan, the Azeri National Oncology Clinic has received limited support from their national government to update medical equipment for diagnosing or treating the country's 100,000 patients afflicted by cancer.

Distribution

Seeing the great need of the Azeri people, NCC initiated a project to deliver new and recently refurbished cancer-related medical equipment and new hospital supplies to the Azeri National Oncology Clinic. NCC officially handed-over the medical products to the Azeri hospital in a ceremony that included U.S. Ambassador Ross Wilson and the Azeri Deputy Minister of Health.

Result

The National Cancer Coalition donation provided the Azeri National Oncology Clinic with medical supplies to last approximately one year and equipment that will be helpful for many years to come. The medical equipment list was extensive and included diagnostic machines, microtomes, a laryngoscope, operating tables, nebulizers, a cytoscope, laboratory microscopes, laboratory centrifuges, and surgical instruments.
